Your Hair Care Regimen

What works for you?

The best hair care regimen can seem slightly difficult and challenging to find. Being that everyone's hair needs are different it is best to first get to know your hair. Listening to your hair and paying attention to it can help tremendously with deciding what is needed in your hair care regimen. Finding a hair care regimen and sticking with it can help in achieving a healthy, beautiful, and flowing mane.

A healthy care routine

A healthy hair care routine consists of: shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioning, protein treatments, oils, butters, and daily styling aids. The short list below can help assist you in deciding what to look for when choosing the best products to be used in your hair care regimen.

Shampoos

It is important to use a sulfate free moisturizing shampoo in your hair care regimen. Some commonly known sulfates that are usually found in shampoos are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SUDS or NaDSO). These sulfates are the detergents that causes the sudsy lather that is usually found while washing your hair.

Its benefit is cleansing the hair and scalp while cutting dirt and grime build up while its disadvantage is stripping the hair while cleansing, causing scalp irritation, and dryness. Why use a sulfate free shampoo? Sulfate free shampoos are mild detergents that don’t wash away the hair’s natural moisture. They don't produce the large amount of lather that is usually found in traditional shampoos. However, they require more ingredients to achieve a thicker, and top quality product. Sulfate free shampoos do a magnificent job of getting rid of product and oil build up, and do not strip the hair. Although it is good to use a sulfate free shampoo weekly it is also helpful to use a sulfate shampoo once a month to deep cleanse the hair by removing excessive oil and product build up from the hair and scalp.

Conditioners

Conditioning the hair is just as important as cleansing the hair in your hair care regimen. Using a good conditioner will help to restore the strength of the hair as well as assist in retaining moisture. It is good to co-wash the hair at least twice a week. This helps with removing excessive oils and product buildup from the hair and scalp. Although co-washing the hair is considered great for assisting with retaining moisture, it is also a wonderful idea to deep condition the hair at least once a month. Deep conditioning the hair will help with preventing excessive breakage and dryness. It is also helpful to try and find a protein infused deep conditioner.

Protein Treatments

Protein treatments are very important in achieving healthy hair. With hair being made up of over 91 percent of protein, which originates at the hair follicles, it is understandable why the hair would need protein to remain in a healthy state. Protein conditioners are great for hair that is dry, brittle, and/or over processed, these treatments will prevent future hair damage by adding moisture, as well as assisting with hair that has heat damage and split ends.

Although protein conditioners are a temporary fix to split ends, it allows the hair the time to repair itself naturally. If you are one that would like to do a homemade protein treatment these are ingredients that you can use such as; eggs, honey, mayo, almond oil, olive oil, and avocados. Protein treatments should be done once every 4 to 6 weeks, to much protein in the hair will cause it to feel rough, hard, and tangly.

Butters and Oils

It is also helpful to incorporate a good moisturizing method in your hair care regimen. Moisturize the hair daily by using the LOC method. This can be done by using the following three easy steps:

Step 1: Liquid (a water based leave in conditioner)

Step 2: Oil or butter

Step 3: Cream (styling cream or gel) The secret to using the LOC method is to moisturize the hair and seal it with an oil or butter, doing this will ensure that the hair is moisturized and protected by locking in the moisture during the sealing phase.
